clear eyes, full heart (can't lose)

Back in 2009, I discovered a TV series called Friday Night Lights.

On the surface,

it was a show about a small town in Texas and their football team.

On the surface,

I was not exactly their target market.

You see, I don't typically watch football (gasp) and I've never lived in a small town like the one depicted on the show.

Having watched a few episodes, however, I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

The show dealt with huge themes of redemption and honor, justice and compassion, love and community.

This was not a show about football.

This was a show about life...

and love...

and loss...

and shortcomings...

and courage...

and faith...

and accountability...

and humility...

and victory...

in the face of defeat.

It was a show about humanity in all of its many permutations and combinations.

And each and every week, we listened as Coach Taylor spoke to his players

reminding them

and us

of six simple words:

Clear Eyes, Full Heart...can't lose

These words were not just a battle cry.

These words were a dictum of sorts; principles by which Coach Taylor implored his players to live, both on and off the field.

I still get chills when I allow the depth of these words to seep through my conscience.

Within these words resides a truth that resonates.

Can you feel it?

Clear Eyes, Full Heart...can't lose

Slow it down and listen beyond the words...

Clear Eyes, Full Heart...can't lose

And so, as I begin this New Year, I am not called to make resolutions or choose a word to represent my upcoming year, or even methodically review the events of the year that just closed...

I am called to remember a truth that resides within us all...

a call to engage in life...

each day...

as best we can...

knowing that if we surrender to this truth...

we can't lose.

No matter what.

Clear eyes, full heart...can't lose.
